Welcome to Grammar
Grammar by Adroit Tutors is a rule-based grammar tool for students and teachers of English. Type a word, phrase or sentence, and it shows you the analysis together with the rules behind it, so you learn the reason as well as the answer.
What You Can Do With It
- Learn the rules while you check your work. Every result states the rule and explains it in plain words.
- Prepare for exams. The labels, symbols and examples follow the systemic functional grammar taught in Nigerian universities (SPCOA, MHQ, ANLP, theme and rheme).
- Correct your own writing. The Concord tab catches agreement errors and common usage mistakes and gives the corrected sentence.
- Test yourself. Practice marks your answers at once and shows where you are weak.
- Keep growing every day. A daily grammar question or fun fact helps you learn a little at a time.
The Sections
Tap a section to open it.
Break any word into morphemes: root, stem, prefixes and suffixes, inflection, and how the word was formed (blending, clipping, acronym, borrowing and more).
Look up a word to see its word class, type, content or function status, meaning, sample sentences and usage rules.
Check a nominal, verbal, adjectival, adverbial or prepositional group and see its structure (MHQ, ANLP, TAL, PC).
Analyse a sentence into S, P, C, O and A, see main and subordinate clauses, and view a zoomable tree diagram.
Find the clauses and groups that have been rankshifted, counted and named.
Find the structural type (simple, compound, complex, compound-complex) and the functional type (statement, question, command, exclamation, optative).
Type a verbal group to see its tense, aspect, voice and whether it is simple, complex, continuous or discontinuous.
Check subject-verb agreement and many common grammar and usage errors, with the rule and the correction.
Turn direct speech into indirect speech and see every change made to tense, pronouns, time words and reporting verbs.
Find the theme and rheme of each clause: topical, textual and interpersonal, marked or unmarked.
Ask any grammar question. Questions that need a tutor lead you to our course.
Take a marked quiz across all topics, with an explanation for every answer and your score at the end.
How To Find Your Way Around

See all toolsParts of Speech
Parts of speech are also called word classes. Type a word to see its word class, type, whether it is a content or function word, its meaning, sample sentences and usage rules. Type a whole sentence to tag every word.
Groups (Phrases)
Type any group to see its type and structure, such as the man (nominal group, MH), in the house (prepositional group, PC) or very tall (adjectival group, MH).
Label guide. A modifier (M) is also called a pre-modifier, and a qualifier (Q) is also called a post-modifier. In clause labels, O and Ce (complement extensive) mean the same thing, and C and Ci (complement intensive) mean the same thing. She loves a teacher: SPO or SPCe. She is a teacher: SPC or SPCi. O also lets us tell indirect and direct objects apart: She bought her a pen: SPOiOd.
Clause Structure
Type a sentence to get its clausal analysis (the SPCOA structure of every clause), whether each clause is main or subordinate, finite or non-finite, and then its tree diagram.
Label guide. S = subject, P = predicator, O = object, C = complement, A = adjunct (adverbial). O and Ce (complement extensive) mean the same thing, and C and Ci (complement intensive) mean the same thing. She loves a teacher: SPO or SPCe. She is a teacher: SPC or SPCi. O also lets us tell indirect and direct objects apart: She bought her a pen: SPOiOd.
Sentence Types
Type a sentence or a passage to see its structural type (simple, compound, complex, compound-complex, multiple or minor) and its functional type (statement, question, command, exclamation or optative), with the reasons.
Concord and Usage
Type a sentence to check subject–verb agreement and about eighty common usage errors (tense, verb forms, articles, prepositions, pronouns, word choice and more). The rule is named and the corrected sentence is given.
Tense and Aspect
Type a verbal group, such as has been eaten or had always done, to get its tense, aspect, voice and whether it is a simple, complex or discontinuous verbal group. English has only two tenses: present and past. The present tense works for present and future time; the past tense works for past time.
Morphology
Type a word to see its morphemes, root, stem, bound and free morphemes, and how it was formed: affixation, compounding, blending, clipping, acronym, borrowing and more.
Rankshifting
Rankshifting is when a unit shifts its rank: a clause working inside a group, or a group or clause working inside another unit of its own rank. It happens only at clause and group level. Type an expression, a sentence or a whole passage to find every rankshifted clause and group.
Label guide. O and Ce mean the same thing, and C and Ci mean the same thing. She is a teacher: SPC or SPCi. She loves a teacher: SPO or SPCe.
Theme Analysis
Type a sentence or passage. Each clause is analysed for its theme (the starting point of the message) and its rheme (the rest). Textual, interpersonal and topical themes are shown, with marked or unmarked for the topical theme.
Reported Speech
Put the speaker’s words in quotation marks, with the reporting clause (said, asked, told …) outside them. The tool turns direct speech into indirect speech and shows every change it made.
Ask
Ask any grammar question: a definition, a rule, a usage doubt. If a question is outside what this app can answer, you will be shown how to get help from a tutor.
Practice
Test yourself. Questions come from every section, are marked at once, and each answer is explained.
